Yvonne & Abby first met when Yvonne was a 9th grader, and Abby was her HS English teacher, almost 15 years ago! Because Yvonne was asked to show what she knew through public presentations of learning during HS, storytelling & public speaking have become central to her life/success-she is now a professional public speaker & podcast host. As Abby experienced the power of students as narrators of their own stories of learning while she was teaching, she has spent the last 8 years working to shift assessment across the country. Today our commitment to public speaking & storytelling intersects so that we can support educators in creating the conditions for students to embody the power of their own stories, told in their own voices. During this workshop we will share parts of a framework for rethinking assessment, as well as concrete tools/strategies for educators to center student voice & storytelling as a form of meaningful assessment.
